Trainee Accounting Technician (AAT)

Burnham-on-Sea

At Westcotts, we’re a Top 50+50 Accountancy Practice and a Top 50 Apprenticeship Employer, with over 300 team members across Devon and Somerset. We’re passionate about developing talent, and we are now looking for a Trainee Accounting Technician to join our Burnham-on-Sea team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is either brand new to accountancy or already part AAT qualified, looking to build a rewarding career with a supportive and professional firm.

Why Join Westcotts?

  • Fully funded training for your AAT qualifications
  • Salary paid throughout your study time, plus regular pay reviews
  • Ongoing support, mentoring, and development opportunities
  • A friendly, collaborative culture where your career can thrive

As a Trainee Accounting Technician, you’ll combine practical, hands-on experience with theoretical study towards your AAT qualification under an apprenticeship agreement.

The programme covers Level 3 and Level 4 AAT apprenticeships, giving you a solid grounding in areas such as:

  • Bookkeeping and accounting standards
  • Personal and business tax
  • Financial reporting and analysis

We’ll provide full funding for your training, support and mentoring throughout your journey, and pay you your full salary while you attend classes or study. You’ll also benefit from regular pay reviews as you progress.

But it’s not just about study – around 80% of your time will be spent working directly with our team, gaining valuable client experience. You’ll be involved in:

  • Preparing financial information, reports, and returns
  • Providing personal and company tax computations
  • Preparing VAT returns and bookkeeping services
  • Supporting information gathering and analysis to help clients make business decisions
  • Using specialist software to record and manage financial transactions

This blend of training and experience will equip you with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to build a long-term career in accountancy.

This job description summarises the main duties and responsibilities of the post, however the list is not exhaustive as the post-holder may be required to undertake other duties and projects of similar level and responsibility.

  • A solid academic record – typically strong GCSE and/or A-level results (or equivalent). Other academic pathways will also be considered.
  • A strong work ethic with a professional, team-focused approach
  • A good working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel, and the ability to pick up new IT systems quickly
  • Strong analytical, numerical, and methodical skills
  • A positive attitude – friendly, personable, and confident
  • Resilience, adaptability, and the ability to multi-task
  • Good organisation, attention to detail, and initiative
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
