National Apprenticeship Week
Case Study: Matt Keane
For over a decade, Matt Keane has been an integral part of Westcotts’ talented team of accountants. His story is one of learning, growth and commitment, supported by Westcotts’ focus on providing extensive training and development opportunities right across the firm.
From an entry-level position to a senior leadership role, Matt’s career reflects the significant opportunities and route to success offered by apprenticeships and on-the-job learning.
Born and raised in Plymouth, Matt’s roots in the city run deep, with a close-knit family and a strong connection to the area and its community. After completing his A-levels at Devonport High School for Boys, Matt faced a pivotal decision about his future. Although university was a common path for many of his peers, Matt opted for an alternative route.
“I decided university wasn’t the route I wanted to go down at that time,” said Matt. “When I saw an advert in the paper for an entry-level role at Parkhurst Hill accountants, I knew it was an opportunity worth pursuing.”
Matt joined Parkhurst Hill (which went on to merge with Westcotts) in September 2012, beginning a journey that would shape his professional future. He embarked on a three-year apprenticeship, earning his AAT qualifications through Accountancy Learning, based locally in Plymouth. This blend of on-the-job training and structured study proved to be the ideal combination for Matt.
“I would definitely recommend this route to anyone considering a career in accountancy,” Matt said. “You gain practical experience, get the opportunity to study towards qualifications and get paid – all without the burden of university tuition fees and debt.”
With his AAT qualification complete, Matt then set his sights on becoming a chartered accountant, again with the support and encouragement of his colleagues and the firm. This involved a further three years of study for the ACCA qualification, through Reed College, including multi-week study blocks at the college’s campus in the Cotswolds.
During this period, Parkhurst Hill merged with Westcotts, providing Matt with access to the resources and expertise of a much larger firm. “The merger was a turning point,” he said. “The timing was perfect for me because it opened up further opportunities for growth and development just when I was ready to be taking on more responsibility in my job role.”
In November 2022, Matt was promoted to Director at Westcotts. Reflecting on his career progression, Matt attributes much of his success to the firm’s supportive culture.
“Westcotts has always been true to its word. The firm has consistently followed through on its promises to support my career development,” he says. “It’s a company that genuinely puts people first.”
Matt’s work primarily focuses on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and family businesses. He finds great satisfaction in helping these clients achieve their goals. Additionally, his involvement with clients in the charitable sector highlights his commitment to making a positive impact.
“Supporting charities and seeing the difference they make in people’s lives is incredibly rewarding,” he said.
Outside of work, Matt enjoys a busy personal life. He and his partner Claire are expecting their first child this year, a milestone they are eagerly anticipating. In his free time, Matt is a keen golfer and follower of motorcycle racing.
Matt’s journey is an excellent example of power of apprenticeships and Westcotts’ dedication to its team members.
“For anyone considering a career in accountancy, I can’t recommend the apprenticeship route enough,” said Matt says. “My thanks also to Westcotts, which has created an environment where people can thrive and where it is really enjoyable to work. I’m proud of what I have achieved personally and to be part of such a fantastic team.”
